Purim and Shabbat in Odessa

I understand that Thursday night’s Purim celebration at Odessa’s Migdal JCC was particularly meaningful to our students. Between the puppet theatre, singing and dancing, and the attention to detail in the hand-made decorations, people were blown away by the mind, heart, and soul that went into the celebration. Baltimore Students Arrive in Odessa!

Odessa_1_1.jpgThis morning our students woke up around 4:45 AM so that they could head to the airport an hour later to board their flight to Odessa. They arrived right on time and were instantly struck by Baltimore’s sister city’s beauty and mild climate. People commented how laid-back it seemed and how much greenery there is; those who had been elsewhere in Europe compared it to a variety of capital cities. Read more »

From Kyiv to Berditchev and back again

Everyone woke up early this morning to drive toward the periphery of Kiev
around 100 miles to the town of Berditchev. Berditchev is a shtetl that
has been known in particular for one of its leaders, Rabbi Levi Yitzchak
(1740–1810), who is an important figure in the development of Chasidic
Judaism and is particularly known for his Torah commentary, Kedushas Levi. Read more »

Привет from Kyiv!

UMBC Hillel students arrive in Ukraine

Our UMBC Hillel Goes to Ukraine participants arrived together just a few minutes late to Kiev’s Borispol’s airport around noon today. Although there was a slight delay in the airport, by the time our students sailed through customs and headed into town for a tour of the city. After seeing some churches (Ukraine was the locus of the proliferation of Orthodox Christianity among the Slavs late in the 10th Century), they visited Kiev Hillel and met the director of Kiev Hillel. Tea with Tanya

With Spring Break fast approaching, teachers are trying to fit in test after test and a seemingly endless pile of assignments, do you need a mini-break before you can finally get away from it all for a week?

Take some time for yourself to kickback, relax, and enjoy delicious tea. Hang out with friends and maybe make some new ones.

This is a therapeutic you won't want to miss. Be at the Commons across from Jazzmans at 3pm on Tuesday.

Any questions? Email Tanya, UMBC Hillel's JCSC Fellow.

A Taste of Torah

This week's Torah portion is Vayikra

After last week's portion of Pekudei, which was focused on the intricacies of building the tabernacle, Vayikra is concerned with animal sacrifices: How should an animal be sacrificed? Who should sacrifice? Sacrifices to make up for past wrongs and sacrifices on other occasions.

If you'd like to learn more we will be discussing this week's Torah portion on Monday at 6 PM. Just stop by the Commons room 329 and pull up a chair. Snacks will be provided.

Email UMBC Hillel with any questions

Kosher for Passover Meal Plan

We are happy to once again to announce the annual kosher-for-Passover meal plan at UMBC.

If you are not familiar with the plan, each year the past few years UMBC Hillel has partners with Dining Services to serve sixteen fresh kosher-for-Passover meals (prepared by local caterers under rabbinical supervision of the Star-K)—one lunch and one dinner every day for the eight days of the holiday (for the first night we are happy to connect you to a seder celebration off-campus if you are not going to be with your family). Each meal will be served in the Dining Hall conference room or the dining hall itself, depending on how many people sign up. Read more »

Bee Movie

UMBC Hillel Students got the opportunity this past Sunday to get a break from Campus and catch a movie with their favorite rabbi, beemovie.pngJason Klein and their favorite JCSC fellow Tanya Gutsol. Bee Movie, an animated picture with actors Jerry Seinfeld, Renee Zellweger, and Chris Rock is a multi themed movie that tells the adventure of a bee (Barry B. Benson). Is this just a kids movie... or is there a bigger message from this movie?

Afterwards the group went for ice cream and discussed the movie.
