I was stunned and deeply saddened by the tragic news of the loss of Beni Simon, z'l.

Having met Beni at various UMBC Hillel events, I had the extra good fortune to talk with him in depth during our UMBC Board retreat last summer, when we paired off to do an "introduction" exercise.

I was deeply impressed by Beni's great intelligence, thoughtfulness, and his unusual story as an Iranian Jew who came here as a young child. Questioning and seeking, he had found a community, friends and home with our diverse Jewish students at UMBC.

Beni was one of the many reasons I feel so dedicated to our Board's work in supporting Jewish community on UMBC's campus. His memory will certainly be for a blessing as it continues to motivate me to work hard on behalf of our Hillel.

My heart goes out to his friends, family, and our community at this time of great loss.

lol by the way, he's not completely Black per say - he's Mulatto. And I know that's usually used as a derogatory term, but I mean it with complete respect!
