Students and staff gathered to take pictures of their first days of school and have some milk and cookies in the Commons Breezeway today.  We were particularly honored by the presence of Dr. Nancy Young, VP of Student Affiars, and Dr. Elliot Hirshman, Provost and VP of Academic Affiars.

For the third year in a row, UMBC Hillel welcomed returning students and new students together with fresh berries, whipped cream, and frisbee games on Erickson Field. Of course, those who didn’t feel like playing frisbee could lounge around on some beanbags and enjoy the weather, which has been–by most accounts–pretty incredible this week. More pictures of the evening are here.

How do the Jewish People celebrate Lag BaOmer?

Families go on picnics and outings.

Children go out to the fields with their teachers with bows and (rubber-tipped) arrows, and bats and balls.

Bonfires are lighted throughout Israel. The ones who started this tradition were the followers of Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai, who lighted fires at Mt. Miron, where this Rabbi is buried, in order to lighten the day of his death. This custom spread out to other places too. A second reason for lighting fires is that it is believed that when the mutiny began, the word was spread by lighting fires at the tops of the mountains throughout Judea.

UMBC HILLEL – WE ARE HAVING BBQ, GAMES, MUSIC AND OTHER ACTIVITIES AT THE ERICKSON FIELD!!!
