Shabbat is the seventh day of the week, the original day of rest from biblical times that Jews traditionally welcome at sunset on Friday afternoon and celebrate all the way until Saturday night. Shabbat is a celebratory day of good food, community, and learning.

Every Friday at 6 PM, UMBC Hillel hosts Shabbat celebrations at the Interfaith Center. You can come for services at 6 PM, dinner at 7:15 PM, or both. Dinner is free, but we ask that you RSVP to Sam Khuvis by noon on the Wednesday before to let us know that you’ll be there. The entire UMBC community is welcome.

UMBC Hillel also hosts Shabbat celebrations every Saturday at noon in the Interfaith Center. Lunch (yummy bagels and spreads) is free, but we ask that you RSVP to Dan Stone by noon on the Thursday before Shabbat. Don’t forget to be here for Havdallah (the end of Shabbat) at 8:30pm.

We are grateful to the Nathan and Lillian Weinberg Family Foundation for generously supporting Shabbat at UMBC.

Shabbat menus include anything from “traditional” Eastern European cuisine such as chicken, kugel, and soup to tasty kosher Chinese food.
